How many metaphors and idioms exist in the German language that deal with food and drink or are in some way related to nutrition is known only to Germanists. That there are countless of them has its reasons. Humans must consume food; otherwise, they cannot survive, nor can they work. And although eating and drinking are always a matter of personal taste, it remains one of the great achievements of our culture that, beyond mere sustenance, there are many dishes we enjoy for their delicacy and consume with great pleasure.

Culturally, this enjoyment is associated with pleasant company and spaces specifically designed to be inviting and comfortable. Accordingly, in our working environments we respond positively to offerings that are genuinely intended, atmospherically inviting, and, above all, well designed. Sensory nourishment and shared culinary experiences are important, whether it is just an espresso, a sandwich, or a small menu. The new workspace, designed by brandherm + krumrey for the IPG Mediabrands agency group in Hamburg, is located on the second and third floors of a site consisting of two building sections and distributes 297 workstations across 3,000 square meters of office space. As requested by the clients, it features a corresponding provision focused on nourishment and delicacy: namely pantries and a generously designed “deli,” a restaurant café with a bar counter for both longer and shorter breaks, as well as a cool food cabinet for those in a hurry who prefer to help themselves. Velvety matte linoleum surfaces and a mineral design floor are part of the concept. All around, focused work takes place at desks, on workbenches, and in conference seating. The spatial program includes enclosed individual offices, group workstations, semi-open team zones, and conference rooms. For this purpose, the interior was equipped with a sophisticated, carefully zoned lighting concept. Built-in elements are finished in light oak veneer or sand-colored decor, while the color scheme draws on the corporate colors as a guiding motif, appearing deliberately calm in larger areas or in a pixel-like structure. It also differentiates the organization into individual agency groups. Upholstery fabrics, curtains, and wall colors are harmoniously coordinated. One can only hope that the typical tea served to guests lives up to the high design standards of the workspace.
