When it comes to lighting, photography, painting, or even spatial design, the most intense contrasts occur where light and dark meet — where contrast becomes effective. This creates not only the strongest legibility but also a powerful sensory experience. Photographers, artists, and designers value this greatly — lighting designers, in particular, work with it extensively.

It is therefore entirely understandable that IP44 Schmalhorst GmbH took an interest in this principle when redesigning its headquarters and aligned its workspace interior accordingly. The architectural transformation of the existing building — constructed from precast concrete panels with a distinctive façade — proved highly successful. The foundation of the concept was the exposure and refinement of the materiality, evolving toward an elegant exposed concrete structure with a compact cubic form and a cool, clear aesthetic. The concrete surfaces were uncovered, polished, and thus became a defining element of the design. On the ground floor, a spacious, open exhibition area now allows the company to permanently present its expertise in outdoor lighting “in house.” The required 984 square meters of office space are located on the upper floor, designed as a flowing open-space working environment. Zoning is achieved through full-height built-in cabinets, which also define retreat and communication areas. Additional spatial divisions are created with glass elements. The aforementioned principle of contrast is reflected in the strong interior aesthetic, primarily through the choice of materials: raw exposed concrete surfaces are combined with black MDF built-ins. As the designers aptly describe it, everything is “reduced, clear, and shapes both the structure and the atmosphere of the building.” A new rear extension accommodates additional work areas, a meeting room, and extra storage space. Here, too, openness and transparency prevail, while visual connections to the street and the landscaped courtyard meaningfully integrate the surroundings. Above all, the garden courtyard offers the opportunity to showcase IP44’s outdoor lighting — creating a compelling overall atmosphere not only for employees but especially for guests and clients.
