Design MVRDV Berlin
Location München, Germany
Working in Munich’s Werksviertel is highly appealing. Over the past few years, a number of developments have emerged here that continue to shape this urban workplace of the future. One of them is MONACO: a seven-story building designed by Rotterdam-based architects MVRDV, offering around 3,900 square meters of office space and three underground levels, including a parking garage with seventy spaces.

The project is not only ergonomically planned but also distinctly green: 580 square meters of terraces, vertically integrated natural planting, a hidden pocket garden behind the building, and even façade shingles that shift in color tones. These shingles clad a northeast-facing, annex-like composition of five stacked cubic volumes that rise along the narrow side of the building up to the rooftop terrace. This creates an eye-catching architectural feature that cleverly integrates the entrance and foyer, a large multifunctional space above, and attractive rooftop terraces. This “play area” serves as a place for arrival, meetings, creative and leisure activities, as well as fresh-air relaxation. The shingles — referred to as “Pretty Plastics” — are made entirely from recycled plastic and are part of a circular economy approach. The main building volume, clad in natural-colored, richly textured brick — also recycled material — houses large open-office spaces. Social areas are interwoven with creative zones and collaboration spaces; cozy seating areas alternate with conference settings and open-air lounges. Individual work is supported just as much as work-related events and informal gatherings. For those particularly concerned with health, it is reassuring to note that an advanced “Immune Office Technology” is in use. A filtered circulation system creates a separation between supply and exhaust air streams in the office spaces, while also enabling highly efficient heat recovery. This prevents contamination of fresh air by virus- or bacteria-laden exhaust air. And complementing all this is the popular Munich atmosphere outdoors — on the terraces or in the pocket garden. Those working inside benefit as well, enjoying stimulating city views through floor-to-ceiling windows.
