Even in old, romantic cities, work needs to be done, and there are modern office buildings there, whose floors are just waiting for productive use. A pleasant side effect of such a location, like the one the IT company Mymediset found in Freiburg, is of course the beautiful view of the old town and surrounding landscape, especially since the company’s two floors are located on the 3rd and 4th levels. The design office studiopetergaessler took on the generously sized 1,800 square meters of office space for 60 employees, incorporating even the existing furniture. The concept, which was meant to focus on the different needs of the employees, places a spacious coffee and dining area at the center, which can accommodate the entire office community. This area is ideal for informal meetings and exchanges. The Agora at the heart of the office building further supports this: a versatile space where large meetings, training sessions, events, and other activities can take place.
Conference areas in various sizes complement it, hosting both smaller meetings and larger events. Lounge areas offer employees a place to relax and hold informal meetings. A special feature for the IT company is the creation of several small video hubs for individual video conferences. Privacy and exclusivity are also ensured: these are found in the executive area.
The color design of the offices is friendly and vibrant, with the clear goal of creating a motivating and lively atmosphere. In areas where red or green shines intensely, employees or clients can find a spot for relaxed sitting or intense exchanges: conference table, sofa, small meeting box, or collaboration area. The natural green is provided by numerous plants, which have been integrated into the space. They serve the ubiquitous desire for at least a small connection to nature, which in turn also improves air quality.
What can architecture do for a good workplace?
Peter Gässler: Modular designs enable adaptable work environments. For me, natural lighting is also important. Large windows enhance productivity and well-being. Indispensable in the space are sound-absorbing, decorative materials that reduce noise. Zones for collaboration and teamwork are promoted through various areas. In summary, good architecture creates an environment that fosters well-being, efficiency, and creativity.
How much should the design of the workspace cater to individual needs?
Workplace design should be flexible and adaptable to create a positive working environment. Different work styles require a design that boosts productivity. A comfortable environment also promotes mental and physical well-being. In my opinion, workplaces should be flexible to accommodate different tasks. Different needs in acoustics, light, and temperature are essential to foster innovative ideas. A thoughtful design enables all employees to work equally.
Which functions and/or spaces are the most important to you in a working environment?
The most important functions in a working environment include ergonomic workstations for individual productivity, meeting rooms for team meetings, and creative zones for idea exchange. Quiet and break rooms promote well-being, while technological infrastructure and training rooms support personal development.
