Collaboration as a Key to Successful Workspaces

Creating synergies, leveraging differentiated competencies, and improving the use of one’s own products through collaboration—these are, without a doubt, smart approaches that have become essential virtues in an interconnected and economically driven world. It is therefore no surprise that exemplary workspaces often result from close cooperation between clients and designers. The Dortmund campus for the IT service provider Bechtle is a prime example. In addition to the architectural firm KREOR, office furniture manufacturer and interior outfitter kühnle’waiko was involved, leading to a successful exchange—from the initial vision and analysis through to planning, production, and furnishing.

The task was to transform 44,740 square meters of office space across several floors into an inspiring and motivating work environment. Beyond pure functionality, the space was intended to serve as a meeting place for all employees, as well as a co-working hub for partners and clients. Creating a sense of identification—with both the employer and the new location—was also a key goal.

Space for Innovation, Community, and Sustainability

Work can take place at agile or fixed desks; flexible areas promote collaboration, communication, and teamwork. Modern meeting rooms are not only furnished with ergonomic office furniture but also equipped with cutting-edge technology—ideal conditions for efficient meetings and creative workshops. A particular favorite is the café and bistro area above the rooftops of Dortmund. In this inspiring work café atmosphere, teams can do more than discuss projects: the space invites colleagues to enjoy lunch together or take an energizing break with a game of darts or table football.

The rooftop terrace also provides space for after-work events and barbecues. And the project doesn’t neglect environmental responsibility: fifty electric charging stations as well as solar and photovoltaic systems on the campus roof ensure energy efficiency and long-term sustainability.

"With passion and reliability, we tackle even the most challenging projects — for us, ‘impossible’ is not an option. We support our clients wherever they need us, with a skilled team, strong partners, and a flexible, personalized approach based on mutual respect. Together, we’re shaping the future of work and making a meaningful contribution to our clients’ long-term success."

What can architecture do to create a good workplace?
Annika Kühnle:

Workspace design should respond flexibly to individual needs, as this promotes both productivity and well-being. At kühnle’waiko, it’s important to us to create work environments that can adapt to different working styles in order to provide each employee with optimal conditions.

Which functions and/or spaces do you consider most important in a modern work environment?

For us, versatile and personalized spatial concepts are key. Ergonomic workstations and flexible communication zones for interaction are especially important. Retreat areas enable focused work as well as creative breaks. In addition, multifunctional rooms and modern technological equipment are essential to support collaboration and accommodate various working methods.

Which materials do you strongly recommend to your clients in interior design?

We place great value on durable materials that combine functionality and aesthetics. Wood is our material of choice—not only is it robust and sustainable, but it also creates a pleasant atmosphere in a variety of finishes. We also recommend high-quality textiles for seating upholstery that are hard-wearing and easy to maintain, as well as innovative and sustainable materials, such as acoustic panels for sound reduction, to promote a comfortable working environment.
