Location Graz, Austria
Unfortunately, not everyone can achieve this for themselves, but anyone who speaks of having “arrived” enjoys this feeling. Many factors are responsible for this, and certainly, above all, the people around us. However, places—or more precisely, spaces, that is, the architecture—play a decisive role, as they provide us with a specific place. Here we settle in, feel safe and empowered, and ideally even supported. Interior design is the profession that deals precisely with such living situations, installing and shaping them.

A look at Graz reveals an exemplary project—a location that the Breitengrad studio furnished for itself as a studio and headquarters, situated in a distinctively shaped existing building. It is a historic inn that later also served as a rehearsal stage for the University of Music and Performing Arts and, for that purpose, boasted a delightfully spacious interior with a five-meter-high ceiling. The interior structure of the old townhouse could be retained, which saved time and, of course, costs, but also minimized interventions in a functioning layout. The design clearly zones the space without disrupting the overall coherence. Seven permanent workstations are distributed across 85 square meters of office space. The layout, choice of materials, and color scheme were intended to create a holistic and identity-defining effect. The firm’s established way of working had to be reflected in the new workspace in its lived-in, functional, and flexible nature. The color concept is defined by two vibrant primary colors—blue and green—on the surfaces, interspersed with accents in red, the brand color. Beige and black provide a calm counterpoint. Different materials respond to the existing structure while also providing atmospheric and formal diversity. Their character ranges from natural to rough to industrial. All furniture was manufactured and assembled in the in-house carpentry shop. Design and execution were handled by a single team and supported the principle of a “place of one’s own.” At its core is a multifunctional area with a kitchen, lounge, workshop zone, and material library. Movable elements allow for the separation of office workstations
and the event area. A customizable storage unit, a flexible perforated wall, or a shelving system made of construction site fencing create areas that can be reinterpreted at any time. A work environment whose experience also impresses clients.
