Such a place was recently realized in Düsseldorf-Flingern — as a creative hub and curated showroom intended for urban stakeholders engaged in sustainability, design, and real estate transformation. It functions as a networking platform, co-acting and co-working space, and event venue for both internal and external activities. Under the name “cokon,” it aims to be a place for both an engaged public and professional actors, operating through workshops and events to make an impact on society — a productive meeting point shaping the future. But how was this brief translated into a spatial design providing 170 square meters of office space for 10 employees? A key planning parameter was that it should not be a “finished space,” a principle already reflected in the adaptation of an existing older structure. At its core is the “loft” as a showroom, furnished with sustainable furniture and materials. It also serves as a design and material library, a meeting area, and a knowledge workshop. Adjacent to it is a large kitchen space with a long communal table, intended for shared cooking and living. Nearby is the “Dock,” offering multiple workstations for focused tasks, complemented by a gallery used as a “chilling zone” for creative breaks. Throughout, the interior design is deliberately bright and fluid. As a conceptual guiding motif for this open and versatile workspace, the designers and operators foreground the idea of a butterfly cocoon — seen as a symbol of metamorphosis and transformation. This is paired with the principle of togetherness and the philosophical notion that such a biological vessel ultimately gives rise to new life. Overall, it is an idealistic place, actively supported by a sensitive and engaging interior design that strives for development and relevance.
