Design RHO
Location Berlin, Germany
If one aims to bring a mix of very different elements under control within a single space — such as in a supermarket hall or in urban planning—it is advisable to create spatial order. This can be achieved by defining zones that have their own boundaries and can develop characteristic qualities or typical functions. Such territorial structuring offers great advantages for interior architecture, as it allows spaces to be optimally aligned with their intended uses.

Accordingly, three main zones structure the new headquarters of Design Hotels GmbH, as the planners at RHO chose this strategy. A total of 820 square meters of office space for 100 employees and 76 permanent workstations had to be accommodated on the top floor of the AXIS building at Berlin Ostkreuz. The space offers views of Rummelsburger Bucht or the city, along with large windows and five-meter-high ceilings—an attractive volume for the new interior design, which also places emphasis on the sustainable reuse of existing elements and furnishings. The zoning is divided into: office areas, the workshop area “Brand Lab,” and shared communal spaces. The hybrid office concept combines open and closed structures, with fluid transitions between different types of use ensuring a sense of spatial continuity. The brand identity of Design Hotels informs the color and material concept. Neutral, natural tones are set in dialogue with targeted accent colors such as rust red and matcha green. An atmospheric differentiation of the various zones is created through distinct combinations of colors and materials. Think tanks and small retreat areas with acoustically effective wall surfaces, meeting rooms, and phone booths characterize the office zone. A café mediates between the interior and the outdoor terrace, while the canteen can also be activated as an event space in the evenings. A freestanding circular meeting room is a defining feature. Shelving modules and seating niches alternate, while perforated panels create visual permeability while also providing separation when needed. The “Conversation Pit,” an organically shaped platform, encourages informal exchange. Finally, the “Brand Lab” should be mentioned—a flexible work zone centered around the main workshop area, which also serves as a space for presentations and exhibitions.
