In one way or another, everything we humans do revolves around communication. We need to inform ourselves about one another, gain insights, coordinate, and so on. Architecture, too, interacts with its users by conveying messages — through lettering and signage, for example — and by sending signals through its spaces and surfaces that we intuitively perceive: through design and atmosphere.

When a communications expert like O2 Telefónica Germany establishes a company location, it is only natural that significant attention is given to this very quality. INPULS Innenarchitektur was commissioned to realize such a working environment in the newly built “Tichelhaus,” an office complex in Hamburg’s city center. The project comprises 4,280 square meters of office space, including a 157-square-meter gastronomy area — after all, 700 employees are based here. The seven floors are organized into four functional zones, primarily to enable intuitive orientation and coherent spatial sequences. The “ME zones” are dedicated to focused, individual work. In terms of design, rust-colored tones and stone surfaces reference the city. The “WE zones” are designed for collaboration, featuring meeting rooms, focus rooms, and phone booths. The guiding theme here is “network,” reflected in the dominance of blue tones as Telefónica’s corporate colors. Curtains, walls, and flooring form color fields, combined with monochrome furniture. Carefully orchestrated sightlines create stimulating shifts in perspective. The “PLUS zones” provide space for breaks, exchange, and events. They play with the motif of “water,” introducing a more emotional dimension. Flexible wave-like modules create seating, counters, or small stages, while a large-scale acoustic installation generates a visual tension between floor and ceiling. Finally, the “Support” areas comprise the service zones, including coffee lounges, storage rooms, printer niches, and technical facilities. Guided by the theme of “harbor,” these spaces feature exposed concrete, metallic surfaces, and crane-like shelving systems. The new headquarters — and workspace — thus takes on the role of creating a place of encounter and orientation, a site of brand identity, and above all, a productive environment for communication.
