A landscape is more than naturally given topography. It is deliberately designed, cultivated, and perhaps also zoned. In any case, its formation is subject to numerous functional requirements and interventions. It offers specific possibilities of use and often also aesthetic qualities. For this reason, interior architecture also speaks of a “landscape” when referring to a larger spatial context that can be perceived as such and that is structured into distinct functional zones.

In the design for the Bochum headquarters of the IT company Pradtke GmbH, the planners at Zeller & Moye adopted this idea. Today, the once fixed workplace must adapt to changing needs and, together with the employees — 70 in this case — become dynamic and flexible, allowing for different working modes and locations. Ideally, everyone can actively move between spaces: settling down at a computer for focused work, engaging in brainstorming within a small group, or attending larger gatherings such as discussions, training sessions, or events. Alternatively, one can move into a differently characterized zone within the 494-square-meter office landscape—one that enables social interaction, relaxed togetherness, or, conversely, separation for contemplation and recovery. Two areas were created within the elongated rectangular ground floor plan, divided by a centrally positioned foyer and staircase: to the right, a large, flowing space with an extra-long worktable and acoustic booths for concentrated work. Here, people can also cook and eat together or hold spontaneous meetings. A cushioned seating landscape even allows for power naps. To the left of the staircase lies a large, flexible hall equipped with movable furniture for teaching formats and events — extendable auditorium elements serve as mobile seating rows. The space offers views into an adjacent inner garden, which has a calming effect. Natural, sustainably selected materials, integrated planting, ample daylight, and natural ventilation all contribute to the well-being of users and visitors. The concept of a miniature landscape, with its varied and open spatial design, promotes movement and interaction as well as inspiration.
