Everything flows, everything grows. Natural laws and natural phenomena are, for many of us as beings connected to nature, a pleasant experience — a stream, a tree. This archaic sense of familiarity becomes even more positive when one considers history and ecological sustainability.

Why these reflections? Because here we are dealing with a timber building in the Black Forest that makes use of its natural potential; because it concerns a forge with a centuries-old tradition; and because it is based on a smart concept that flexibly responds to changing requirements. An internationally operating GmbH that today positions itself with optimized sales structures, digital affinity, and a future-oriented approach naturally builds differently than in the 16th century. In Freudenstadt, a new workspace was created for 14 employees of SHW Schmiedetechnik, with permanent workstations across 825 square meters of office space. An additional 2,800 square meters were designated for storage and logistics. The style is clearly structured and precisely detailed. Four functions were taken into account: a high-bay warehouse with delivery, shipping, and picking areas; a social zone with changing rooms and a spacious break room; and the two-story sales office above. For its redesign, the former individual and double offices were opened up into a continuous spatial layout in order to optimize workflows and foster a sense of team cohesion. This was preceded by a joint process analysis aimed at improving workflows and strengthening points of interaction. The interior design naturally had to address a range of requirements: open and semi-open work settings, meeting areas, and spaces for retreat. At the same time, connections to adjacent departments were important, ensuring short distances and quick, efficient communication with colleagues in shipping and logistics. A suitable material and color concept was also developed to reflect both the location and the company’s identity. References to forging culture — iron and fire — as well as to the Black Forest as a region and natural environment were incorporated. Wood, untreated steel, and stone now create a distinctive aesthetic. And since metalworking has always been closely linked to energy, this aspect is also addressed today — through certified energy management, including photovoltaic systems and a connection to a local heating network.
