Design RAUM + INHALT – Dirk Weber
Location Fulda, Germany
Every architectural design requires a specific location, unless it is conceived virtually in the imagination. This connection to the site and its context is a source of joy for many designers, as it allows for the incorporation of guiding principles and meaningful elements. That is why, for many, for example, a striking location in a dramatic landscape or in a bustling old town is far more appealing than the famous “green field.”

In a historic and complex urban setting, one can draw formal inspiration or engage with the stories of the place. In Fulda’s old town, interior designer Dirk Weber was fortunate in this regard. He took on the development of a workspace that is both prestigious and atmospherically welcoming—for the 354-square-meter office space and 35 stationary workstations of a tax firm. The ground floor, the central client area, was equipped with five meeting rooms of varying sizes. A space-defining, semicircular, and glazed partition wall with solid oak supports forms the centerpiece and serves as a backdrop for the reception desk. It acts as a subtle boundary between the reception area and the back office. Adjacent to this is a cafeteria, characterized by a large-scale, vividly colored wall graphic with a jungle motif, which brings a lively, almost theatrical effect to the office floor. In the center is the service core with a surrounding planter box. It integrates client restrooms, building services, and a shelf for professional literature. The law firm also has two large conference rooms, which were likewise given their own graphics, implemented on mobile partition elements. In them, the Fulda Cathedral, which dominates the cityscape, and other architectural landmarks can be recognized. The upper floor is characterized by rounded room corners, structured central zones with kitchenettes and copy areas—time and again one encounters graphic motifs that foster identification and orientation. The central hub is the cafeteria, which has a cozy atmosphere and is connected to a kitchen—an invitation to cook together. In the evening, the socializing can continue in a slightly more rustic setting when you head up to the rooftop terrace, where an outdoor seating area with a grill and city views awaits. The bottom line: This is a successful “localization”!
