Life in a big city like Frankfurt am Main is, of course, not only vibrant and dynamic but also exhausting and loud. Each evening, the pulse of the city rushes in as you leave the office – especially one situated in a lively business district like this. Without question, the city’s attractions and convenient transport connections offer major advantages; nearby restaurants, cafés, and other amenities make for an appealing location. Beyond these benefits, however, Callidus Energie GmbH aimed to create a modern, functional workspace that would also focus on the well-being of its 20 employees. In collaboration with NINIC Interior Design, the goal was to develop a high-quality interior architecture that harmonizes productivity and flexibility with a calm, welcoming atmosphere – an environment that balances the buzz of Frankfurt with a sense of serenity. A key to the successful planning process was the close cooperation with the client, involving regular meetings and feedback loops. This creative phase greatly supported the design studio’s work, especially in the development of innovative solutions that reflect the company’s corporate identity and values – a complete success.
The concept for the office space was drawn from nature – inspired by fresh greenery: a workspace as an urban jungle. The concentrated layout of the 250-square-meter office is shaped by openness and transparency, thanks to large windows and a carefully planned spatial configuration. The result is a bright and inviting environment that encourages exchange and collaboration. The flexible spatial design makes it possible to create a variety of work zones, ranging from open office landscapes to quiet retreat areas for focused work. Great emphasis was placed on sustainable and high-quality materials throughout. A particular highlight of the project – often mentioned in reflections on the design process – is the collaborative development of the seating platform. Tailored precisely to the needs of the client, it became a standout feature of the new workspace.
What can architecture contribute to a good workplace?
Natascha Ninic: (Interior) architecture creates empowering spaces that make corporate culture visible. Natural materials and corporate design reflect the company’s values and support employee well-being.
To what extent should workspace design respond to individual needs?
Flexibility is key: modular furniture and adaptable spaces respond to individual requirements and offer both private areas for retreat and open zones for collaboration.
Which functions or spaces do you consider most important in a work environment?
Key functions include focus rooms for concentrated work and open spaces for teamwork. Flexibility is essential to accommodate different work styles. The office should provide everything a home office cannot — such as spaces for social interaction, ergonomic workstations, and multisensory environments that support well-being.
