The Weleda A.G., headquartered in Switzerland, is one of the internationally operating companies and is therefore also tasked with managing the construction of its branch offices. Instead of renting an anonymous, standard warehouse, those in charge decided to locate their logistics operations in a pioneering new building that aligns with the company’s universally recognized philosophy. This building was to be DGNB Platinum pre-certified and create “a sustainable, people-centered work environment.” The specifications went beyond the company’s productivity goals: the use of regional natural materials such as wood and clay, a self-sufficient energy supply via geothermal and photovoltaic systems, and adherence to the Cradle-to-Cradle principle. Inspired by ecosystems, the site strives to create a natural working environment that—incorporating suggestions from employees—can foster a healthy climate and a pleasant atmosphere through harmonious spatial design and the ecologically sound use of materials. With equal care, the team set out to give the new users of the campus the opportunity to develop an emotional connection to the site through the overall form of the buildings as well as through the detailed design. Weleda and its architects clearly view this project, beyond its economic efficiency, as exemplary of a future-oriented New Work architecture. And that includes the outdoor areas: Clever landscaping combined with regional planting concepts, nesting sites, and extensive greenery aims for biodynamic benefits, for a working environment in the best possible harmony with nature.
